In today's environmentally aware world, counting the carbon cost of your direct mail campaign is as important to your business as looking after its finances. Clare Taylor, director of environmental print company Clare Taylor Consulting, explains how to count your costs.

Areas covered include calculating your carbon footprint with the aid of marketing industry guidelines such as the recently published PAS 2050 and PAS 2020, materials to avoid (such as plastic wraps), recycling tips, questions to ask printers and other suppliers (for example, do they use vegetable-based inks?), and how to offset your carbon footprint.
