Why sensory marketing works

Sensory marketing draws on all five senses to connect with consumers. In this presentation we consider each one and how they can be harnessed in direct mail and general marketing campaigns.

The five senses in a nutshell:
- Sound has the power of association and penetrates very deep, very fast.
- Smell bypasses the cortex (which is home to rational thought) to create a direct emotional response.
- Touch is a major part of product evaluation for consumers – they want objects that feel good.
- The best way to communicate taste is through emotion not taste words.
- What we see stirs ideas and emotions in us that can transform our perception of an image.
