'It's bills first, then the best stuff later'

Even when there aren't enough hours in the day, busy mums use mail to help take control of their day-to-day affairs and connect with the outside world, as this film reveals.

However, it's not all about bills that need paying; they enjoy getting catalogues and magazines, and see them as an opportunity to take some time out for much-needed relaxation!

Watch the film and download our useful key insights at the bottom of the page.

Natasha Buttivant: There is me, my husband, two daughters five and ten, who keep me very, very busy. Obviously I have to look after them, take them to school, which I do every day because my husband works six days a week.  From there, I work part time as well. I try to do the hours that the children do. I’ve got quite a flexible job, I work at a hospital, and just constantly taking the girls to places, bringing them home, trying to fit in housework, trying to take them to dancing or swimming or gymnastics, do homework. It is just I feel sometimes there's not enough hours in the day.
Helen Clark: I live here with my partner, well my fiancé, and two daughters. I have a one year old and a three year old, obviously the three year old is not at school yet, so it’s quite busy but quite hectic but I enjoy it.
Heather Beckwith:  The family unit comprises of me, dad, Sydney’s dad, and Syd. And it is quite, what’s the word, hectic.
Gemma Price: Ok, so when I get my mail, when I hear it drop through the letterbox, I go and get it straightaway, regardless of what I'm doing.
Romain Coonaghe: It is actually nice to receive stuff through the post.
Natasha Buttivant:  Yeah, apart from bills, I really enjoy it, getting mail.
Helen Clark: I like to receive vouchers, coupons off, free samples, anything like that.
Heather Beckwith: Part of the fun with the vouchers is that they come through the post. Oh Hello Bertie!
Natasha Buttivant: I do like to receive catalogues, like I say, things that are telling me about new items or websites that I enjoy looking on.
Helen Clark: I have a magazine subscription and I really look forward to seeing that.
Romain Coonaghe: The stuff that kind of grabs my attention is the bills, ultimately, first and foremost I’ll try to open those first. Then you’ve got the best bits at the end.
Natasha Buttivant: Sometimes I see an advert on the TV and then through the post I might receive a voucher offering money off or half price to try the new product. I think that’s good. I don’t think either one of those is better than the other. I think they actually complement each other to see the actual visual advert and then to receive the post is a good idea.
Helen Clark: I like to receive it as it gives me a chance for five, ten minutes to myself without my girls running round, where I can sit down and read it, and it makes an alternative to watching the television.
Helen Clark: Here I’ve got one from Boots, which I do love getting. In here it’s got all their current offers on, all their vouchers and I’ve already picked a few things that I know I’ll go in and get just because of this leaflet.
Romain Coonaghe: Also I did receive... one of the supermarkets sometimes send you, when it’s your birthday, send you a special voucher where you can receive... last year it was ice cream.  This year it was chocolates, so I did go to the supermarket and picked up my free box of chocolates. Yes, that would definitely make me go and buy those chocolates again, because they were definitely very edible – very scrumptious.
Helen Clark: I get details from holiday companies where we’ve been, generally in this country recently with having two young children. But I do get brochures every now and again, even though I’ve not asked for them, which I quite like to get those and just have a look, whether we can afford to go or not at the moment is irrelevant, I just like to look for something to bear in mind for the future.
Gemma Price:  Mothercare sent through a free catalogue a while ago and we actually went to Mothercare and that's where we got his pram from actually.
Natasha Buttivant: This came through the post from the NHS and it was just explaining all the local numbers, health centres, departments that we might need to use sometime in the future. I haven’t used it at the moment but I just thought maybe it could be quite handy.
Gemma Price: I suppose is grateful a bit of a strong word? I don’t know. I suppose it’s quite a nice feeling. You think that’s something I’d like to try and you know, never know, maybe go on to buy the product, which I have done with things for the babies.
Romain Coonaghe: There's something fantastic about coming home and opening mail and you can't wait to get home
Helen Clark: It's the fact that you don't know what's coming through the letterbox which is what I look forward to.
Natasha Buttivant: I really enjoy getting mail, I look forward to it.  I’m quite disappointed if I don’t receive mail, so, yes, I really enjoy it.
